London Stonemasonry restored and repaired masonry on the front façade of a red-brick, late-Victorian semi-detached house on Greyhound Lane in Streatham, south London.

Neil, the homeowner, shared this positive review recommending our work on his property:

“The team did a great job on refurbishing the stonework around our porch area and surrounding our sash windows across two floors. With heavy damage from water ingress, damp and neglect over the years, the stonework required a great deal of stripping back, stabilising, filling, sanding, priming and final coating.

“The end result looks like new. Areas of the porch also required bespoke work to build out areas of damage and wear and tear, which looks seamless with the existing formwork.

“Highly recommend.”

The challenge: Failed paint and deteriorating Victorian stonework

The homeowner approached London Stonemasonry after recognising that their property’s existing stonework was in need of repair. The house, near Streatham Common, had not had its stonework maintained for some time. The façade had deteriorated significantly.

Much of the paint had worn away, leaving the exposed masonry in poor condition, especially on the stone detailing running from the ground floor up to the upper storeys.

Left untreated, this kind of deterioration can accelerate the decay of masonry. Peeling paint on old stone often conceals deeper issues such as micro-cracking or weather erosion, and inappropriate materials can trap moisture in the substrate.

The client understood that stripping and restoring the stone properly would both improve the appearance of the home and protect its long-term structural integrity.

Our approach: Careful cleaning and heritage-sensitive masonry repair

After we visited the property, surveyed it and costed the necessary works, we agreed the scope and pricing with the client.

To remove the old paintwork, we used a two-step cleaning system that combined specialist paint-softener chemicals, carefully selected for their compatibility with heritage masonry, with our DOFF super-heated steam cleaning system.

The DOFF system uses high-temperature steam at low pressure, and is particularly suited for cleaning delicate historic stone without causing damage.

Once the painted layers were fully stripped back, we could assess and carry out the necessary stone repairs. These were performed using appropriate repair materials and methods to match the original features.

With the substrate restored, the team completed the project by redecorating the façade with breathable masonry paint, which allows trapped moisture to evaporate naturally through the surface. This approach helps prevent future deterioration and supports the long-term health of the stonework.

Result: A transformed façade with enhanced architectural character

The entire project was completed in two weeks. The transformation of the façade is substantial. The original architectural character of the house is revealed once again.

This project highlights our expertise in restoring period stone façades using traditional materials and heritage-appropriate cleaning and painting methods.

The client was delighted with the outcome, and praised the clear communication, efficiency, and sensitivity of our work.

The house now presents beautifully from the street, with its historic features restored and protected for years to come.
